Dr. Gordon was post high school educated at State University of New York at Stony Brook. He received his
BS degree in 1971 and a Ph.D. in 1976 after also completing all the requirements for an MD. After graduation with his Ph.D. he continue doing research at Stony Brook as a Post Doctoral Fellow and then as an Instructor of Pathology where his research was focused on understanding the mechanisms of how the respiratory lining repairs itself and he taught Pathology . Dr. Gordon held that position as Instructor for a year when he was recruited to the Department of Pathology at Mt. Sinai Hospital and Medical School. He was recruited to Mt. Sinai to do all the Electron Microscopy in his department as well as be a principle Investigator for lung research projects. He has worked at the Mt Sinai School of Medicine, now called the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and the Mount Sinai Hospital for 44 years. During that time he started as an Assistant Professor, was promoted tice to Associate Professor and finally to Professor of Pathology.

Dr. Gordon has become world famous with Electron Microscopic technology. He has studied everythingfrom nanoparticles to cellular organelles to cells and tissues. He has worked to assist the MD Pathologist in identifying human tumors so they can best be diagnosed for prognosis and appropriate treatment. He has also been a resource for the diagnosis of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia leading to a variety of upper and lower respiratory diseases. He is has been involved in numerous studies of vascular diseases with the now Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He has contributed many important discoveries of how emphysema developments. His work on the development of lung fibrosis led him to the study of how asbestos caused fibrosis of the lung, lung tumors and mesotheliomas.

It was during these studies that Dr. Gordon began processing human tissues to observe by analytic electron microscopy to determine if after having been exposed to asbestos the asbestos could be detected from these human tissues and organs. With its discovery he would write reports and give legal testimony, as an expert, to his findings in the courts when a civil suit was filed against the asbestos companies. It was in 2008 when a lawyer came to his office requesting that he test many the contents of many talcum powder containers. It was in this search that in addition to finding talc and some reported contaminates such as Aluminum silicates and silica that he found asbestos, anthophyllite, tremolite and chrysotile type, as contaminates in every container.

It had been well known that women also got mesotheliomas. However, based on having no evidence of the typical asbestos exposure it was termed idiopathic, meaning the cause could not be determine. However, after finding asbestos in the talc indicated that it was the talc they used on their babies, put onto themselves to stay dry or in cosmetics that contained the asbestos that was causing the mesotheliomas. The asbestos found in the women’s tissues perfectly correlated with the asbestos types found in the containers. Dr. Gordon wrote published papers in peer reviewed journals and as chapters in books on this subject. This explained the causation of mesotheliomas with no history of other sources of asbestos exposure beyond the cosmetic talcum powder.

Previously, Dr. Gordon found in gynecologic organs of women asbestos. It was found in women that used talcum powder in their inguinal region of their bodies. However, when he looked at women that had used cosmetic talcum powder inguinally, he also found asbestos in their gynecologic organs and in their peritoneal cavity along with talc, aluminum silicates and silica causing ovarian cancers and other gynecologic cancers such as uterine and fallopian tube cancers. All of these components correlate perfectly with the exposures to the cosmetic talcum powder. He has published this data in the peer
reviewed scientific literature as well.

It was this overwhelming evidence that inspired Dr. Gordon to write this book knowing that most if not all women that use or used talcum powder had no idea that it could cause these tumors. He wants to get the word out that any women that have used this product must be monitored by their doctors for these cancers so it can be detected early and they would have to face what has been described in the book.

Dr. Gordon has published over 230 peer reviewed manuscripts in the scientific literature along with 16 book chapters and now a book.

Dr. Gordon is married and has three children and four grandchildren. In addition to being a dedicated doctor and researcher, he is very dedicated to his family and especially to their health and overall well being.
